REL 2060 - Islam

Explores various expressions of religious identity across global Muslim societies. With an eye to religion in specific contexts focus is given to major topics from the Qur’an, Muhammad, rituals, religious and political authority, Islamic mysticism, colonialism, and modernity. To highlight broader questions in the study of Islam particular examples range from the classical Islamic period in the Middle East to the contemporary United States. The overall approach of the course is grounded in an understanding of the relationship between religion, history, and context.
