DANC 1210 - Roots of Jazz Roots of Jazz is an interdisciplinary study of jazz dance history centered on the African and African American origins and the legacy of the jazz dance continuum. The course focuses on the importance of Black artists and their contemporaries who inspired the first social-vernacular dances of the twentieth century. It also examines the Africanist influence on the jazz dance idiom and the dances and dancemakers influencing current jazz dance movement and expressivity. The intrinsic relationship between jazz dance, jazz music, and social changes will be explored through embodied movement explorations, archival video, class discussions, and scholarship from predominantly African and African American writers.
