MUS 1510 - Jazz in American Culture Introduction to the history and traditions of jazz. The history of jazz, the nature of improvisation, stylistic evolution, and the great masters of the art form are examined. African diaspora and African American sociology will be examined through: the slave trade, race relations, social sciences and racial diversity. The evolution of early African American musical forms (work songs, field hollers, prison songs, and the blues) will be investigated within the context of a specific cultural group.
Credits: 4 hours
