AAAS 2800 - Topics and Themes in African American and African Studies

This course builds upon the African diaspora experiences through selected topics and themes that address complex social and historical issues such as gender, politics, economics, slavery, civil/human rights, affirmative action, sexual identity/orientation, lynching, genocide, gentrification, cultural mutilation, and modes of cultural production. The course will interrogate theories of race, ethnicity, gender diversity, multiculturalism, colonialism/post-colonialism, modernism/post-modernism, structuralism/post-structuralism, neo-conservatism and neo-liberalism in tandem with the proposed topic(s) and theme(s) being examined. This course is repeatable under a different topic. This course satisfies WMU Essential Studies Level 2: Exploration and Discovery – Societies and Cultures Category.
