ANTH 4060 - The Archaeology of Gender

Gender constructs, a critical organizing principle for human interaction, are an important focus for archaeological investigation. This course will explore the multiple ways archaeologists have attempted to use gender relations as a means to gain insights into individual societies. We will follow gender as an archaeological concept historically and conceptually, as well as the role of feminism in informing our research so that we can be as unbiased as possible by modern gender roles. Students will explore a gendered understanding of the archaeological record in both prehistory and more recent historical periods.
