A-S 1200 - Transformative Texts, Great Questions, and the Human Experience II: The Modern Period

This course will provide students with the opportunity to address the perplexities of the human experience via a dialogical, relational, and textually rich study of transformative texts in the humanities and social sciences. The coursework will (1) help students develop the intellectual skills and habits which are a signature of a liberal arts education rooted in the humanities, and those which enable students to succeed as citizens, regardless of vocation; (2) cultivate the critical thinking and analytic skills which enable students to more clearly think, read, write, and speak about fundamental concerns of human existence and experience; and (3) prepare students to analyze evidence, synthesize conflicting points of view, evaluate assumptions and biases to attain a balanced perspective, and develop critical interpretations of their significance. In this way, this liberal arts coursework can stand as a useful end in itself or it can be used as an excellent stepping-stone to further undergraduate study in any discipline.
