REL 3175 - Sex, Sin, and Gender: The Control of Reproductive Labor from Biblical Times to Roe v. Wade This course examines the religious and political importance of the human body, sexual reproduction, and the roles men, women, and non-binary peoples play in different societies. We will take a broad approach to society, the body, and religion to ask questions about the commonalities and differences between patriarchal and matriarchal societies.
This course compares modern gender roles to those of antiquity to discuss the potential for change in your own lifetime. Together, we will examine famous Judeo-Christian figures such as Eve, Adam, Samson, Delilah, Jezebel, and Abraham. Biblical texts will be crucial for considering how everyday people throughout the world have been influenced by sex, sin, and gender. We will also look at how Christian, European colonizers impacted the religious interpretations of Native American communities after Christianity became a world religion.
