MUS 1510 - Jazz in America An introduction to jazz music that examines its history, traditions, stylistic evolution, and the nature of jazz improvisation through the study of great masters of this art form and significant compositions/performances. The relationship of jazz to race relations and diversity in America is considered through the lives of selected artists. The evolution of early African-American musical forms (work songs, field hollers, prison songs, and the blues) are studied in their relation to the development of jazz in the early 20th century. This course does not require any previous music experience or the ability to read music. This course satisfies WMU Essential Studies Level 2: Exploration and Discovery – Artistic Theory and Practice Category, but may not be elected by music majors (except students pursuing the Multimedia Arts Technology - Music program).
