MUS 4500 - Music Appreciation: The Symphony This non-major survey looks at music for symphony orchestra from the listener’s point of view. It focuses on the ways that musical materials, designs, instrumentation, compositional innovations, and cultural considerations have influenced the development of various styles and types or orchestral music since the mid-1700s. Attendance is required at selected live orchestral concerts in the Kalamazoo area. This course does not require any previous music experience or the ability to read music. This course satisfies WMU Essential Studies Level 2: Exploration and Discovery – Artistic Theory and Practice Category. MUS 4500 may not be elected by graduate music majors, or undergraduate music majors except those in the MAT-Music degree program.
