GEOS 5100 - Advanced Earth Materials This course provides an advanced survey of the modern study of earth materials. Focus will be placed on gaining a better understanding of how modern techniques and analytical data are used to interpret the origins of common rocks and minerals. Emphasis will be placed on hand sample and thin-section description and classification, and application of modern analytical instruments and datasets (e.g., x-ray diffraction mineralogy, elemental and stable isotope geochemistry, geochronology, and high-resolution electron imaging) to arrive at scientifically robust geological interpretations. A multiple-day field trip may be required.
Prerequisites/Corequisites: Prerequisite: Open to upper-level undergraduate and graduate students
