History Major-Secondary Education Curriculum

The secondary teacher preparation program complies with Guidelines for the Certification of Teachers of History established by the American Historical Association.

1. History courses (9 hours)
2. United States history courses (9 hours)
United States history including at least 6 hrs. at the 4000/5000 level Credits: 9 hours 3. Non-Western history courses (6 hours)
Non-Western history including at least 3 hrs. at the 4000/5000 level Credits: 6 hours 4. European and/or General history courses (6 hours)
European and/or General history including at least 3 hrs. at the 4000/5000 level Credits: 6 hours 5. Minimum of 36 hours in history
Minimum of 36 hrs. in history including at least 18 hrs. at the 4000/5000 level. Baccalaureate Writing Requirement
Students who have chosen the History major will satisfy the Baccalaureate Writing Requirement by successfully completing Minor
History majors in the Secondary Education Curriculum must select a minor from the list of Approved Minors designated by the College of Education. Additional Requirements
In addition to the history major, students must complete the following cognate requirements: 1. One approved course in literature
Select from Department of English prerequisites (3-4 hours)
Students who meet the Department of English prerequisites may also select either 2. One approved course in economics
Select either 3. One approved course in geography
Select from 4. Two approved courses in political science
Select Notes:
(1) Each student must complete at least two approved courses in American Indian history or culture, women’s history or women’s studies, African-American history or culture, or Hispanic-American history or culture. These courses may be included within the history major. ENGL 2220 or 2230 (cognate requirement one) also meet this requirement.
(2) All course work at the 3000-level or above in the History major must be completed within ten years of commencing a directed teaching assignment. History majors must have completed at least six hours of History in courses numbered 4200–5960 with grades of “B” or better to be approved by the department for directed teaching. |
