Biology Major (BYLJ)

There are two tracks within this major: Biology, and Biology Secondary Education. Both tracks share a required set of cognate courses in chemistry, physics, mathematics, and statistics. Additional coursework is specified in each track.

Choose one track:


(A) Biology Track (34-39 credit hours)


In addition to the required cognate courses, the Biology track consists of a minimum of 34 credits of biological sciences courses. This course work includes four introductory courses, three intermediate level courses, and three advanced interest courses, including at least one capstone experience. Only three credit hours may be BIOS 4980 and/or BIOS 4990.

Advanced Courses


A minimum of 9 hours from any of the following 4000 and 5000-level courses including at least one capstone:

(B) Biology Secondary Education Track (42-44 credit hours)


The Biology Secondary Education track is designed to prepare students to teach in the areas of biological and environmental sciences in middle and high schools (grades 7-12). A second major in Integrated Science, or minor in another area of science (chemistry, earth science, physics) or math is strongly recommended.

Note: successful completion of this track prepares students for graduate-level work leading to teaching certification, but does not fulfill all requirements for teaching certification. Please consult the College of Education’s revised secondary education guidelines for more information.

In addition to the required cognate courses, The Biology Secondary Education track consists of a minimum of 42 credits of biological sciences courses. This course work includes four introductory courses, six intermediate level courses, and one advanced interest course.

A minimum of 3 hours from any of the following 4000 and 5000-level courses:

Cognate Requirements for Biology and Biology Secondary Education tracks (34-38 credit hours)


Mathematics


One calculus course and one statistics course.

The following course is recommended for those who plan to pursue advanced degrees in Biology, Botany, and Zoology (especially in the areas of ecology and field biology):
