Western Michigan University’s Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse (SPADA) provides professional education for all those who are interested in the field of substance use and addiction. Multidisciplinary in nature, SPADA delivers a balanced orientation of theory and practice, considers a breadth of contemporary issues, and emphasizes a variety of methods for dealing with the problems of addiction, problematic substance use, and substance use disorders. SPADA offers two graduate certificates, the Clinical Addiction Certificate and Addiction Specialization Certificate. All courses are also offered online.

Clinical Addiction Certificate (CADC)
SPADA offers a Clinical Addiction Certificate which can be earned as an independent certificate or can be used to supplement graduate education in related fields such as counseling, psychology, and social work. Specifically, the Clinical Addiction graduate certificate is designed to be a post-baccalaureate certificate. Current graduate students may also apply to the certificate program, if more education and clinical training is desired; however, those students are also directed to review the Addiction Specialization Certificate described below.
This 18 credit-hour graduate certificate aligns the curriculum to assist with those who wish to obtain various credentials in the addictions field (e.g., Michigan Credentialing Board for Addiction Professionals). This program is differentiated from the 9-credit-hour Addiction Specialization Certificate, which will be either for students enrolled in a master’s program or those with a master’s degree seeking additional addiction education or are interested in pursuing addiction credentialing or licensure.

Addiction Specialization Certificate (ADSC)
SPADA offers an Addiction Specialization Certificate that is designed to supplement current or post-graduate education in related fields such as counseling, psychology, public health, nursing, social work, and sociology, as well as other related disciplines.
This 9-credit hour graduate certificate also aligns the curriculum to assist with those who wish to obtain various credentials in the addictions field from state entities (e.g., Michigan Credentialing Board for Addiction Professionals [MCBAP]). For instance, completion of this certificate provides graduates with 135 hours of education required for MCBAP’s Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) credential. Students who wish to obtain additional education hours for MCBAP can elect to take more than the 9 credit hours required for the Addiction Specialization Certificate.
