Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Departments and Programs

The Earth Science major is a flexible course of instruction for students desiring a broad understanding of the earth and environmental processes. There are two tracks within this major: Earth Science, and Earth Science Secondary Education. Both tracks share a required set of core courses and a set of cognates, with additional coursework specified in each track. 34-38 hours are required for this major.

No grade below a “C” will be accepted in the required courses. A “C” average must be obtained across all cognate requirements.

Required Electives (21-25 hours)

The elective credit hours are unique to each of the two tracks described below. Many of these courses are proscribed for the Earth Science Secondary Education Track.

Required Cognate Courses (13 hours)

A College-Level Chemistry Course

A College-Level Physics Course

Baccalaureate-Level Writing Requirement

Students who have chosen the Earth Science Major will satisfy the Baccalaureate-Level Writing requirement by successfully completing one of the following courses:

Choose one track:

(A) Earth Science Track (34 hours)

The Earth Science track is interdisciplinary in nature and offers students an opportunity to select approved courses from several science departments, including Geological and Environmental Sciences; Engineering; Biological Sciences; Geography, Environment and Tourism; Chemistry; and Physics. Courses are selected in consultation with the earth science advisor to design programs that are tailored to the individuals’ needs and professional objectives. Elective courses must be approved by the advisor.

The Earth Science track is not recommended as a stand-alone program. It should be undertaken by students who are taking a double major. (e.g., Environmental Science, Law, Business, Engineering, etc.)

For employment in geosciences with this degree alone, as many as possible of the following courses are highly recommended.

(Note: Many of these courses have prerequisites beyond those in this track.):

Electives (21 hours)

In addition to the core requirements and cognates, twenty-one (21) hours of elective hours must be selected in consultation with the advisor. A minimum of ten (10) elective hours for the track must be taken in the Geological and Environmental Sciences Department.

(B) Earth Science Secondary Education Track (38 hours)

The Earth Science Secondary Education track is designed to prepare students to teach in the areas of earth science, environmental science, astronomy, and oceanography in middle and high schools (grades 7-12). A second major in Integrated Science, or minor in another area of science (biology, chemistry, physics) or mathematics is strongly recommended.

(Note: Successful completion of this track prepares students for graduate-level work leading to teaching certification. It does not fulfill all requirements for teaching certification. Please consult the College of Education and Human Development revised secondary education guidelines for more information.)

In addition to the required Earth Science core and cognates, this track requires the following courses (19 hours):

Electives in Science or Education (6 hours)

Six hours must be selected in consultation with the advisor.

Additional required cognate course for the Earth Science Secondary Education Track (4 hours)
