Music Education: Instrumental: Secondary Education Major (MISJ)

The Bachelor of Music - Education: Instrumental Secondary Education Major is a professional degree for instrumental musicians which culminates in certification to teach Music in the public schools, grades K-12. Admission to this program is by audition on a primary instrument and an interview with education faculty. No minor is required. The process for continuing enrollment in this major is outlined in the Music Student Handbook.

Intern Teaching (12 hours)
Before the student will be recommended for intern teaching, they must have a minimum WMU grade-point average of 3.0 and have met all standards of the College of Education and Human Development. Additionally, the student must have earned no grade lower than a “CB” in any courses specific to the music education major and completed general music requirements in Basic Music, Musicology, Aural Skills, and Conducting with a GPA of 2.5 or better. The application for intern teaching assignment must be made in the Office of Professional Field Experiences one full year before the assignment is to begin.
III. General Music Studies (53 hours)
Applied Music (14 hours)
A total of 14 credit hours of Applied Music on your major instrument. Sections designated for non-performance majors are 2 credits each semester and include juries. Successful completion of a sophomore hearing is required for entrance to MUS 3000.
Performance Ensembles (8 hours)
Major Ensemble (4 hours)
Students are required to complete four semesters of a major ensemble on their major instrument. Major ensembles include the following (placement by audition):
Ensemble electives (2 hours)
Remaining ensemble electives may be selected from the list below. Education majors are strongly encouraged to elect at least one jazz ensemble experience.
Keyboard Musicianship (4 hours)
Education majors who have passed a piano competency exam may be excused from any keyboard requirements and substitute other Music electives for these credits.
Upper-level History/Theory (2 hours)
Selected from the following options:
Music History/Literature electives:
Music Clearance (0 hours)
Verification of completion of juries, sophomore hearing, keyboard proficiency, a senior hearing, and attendance at 84 Music Convocation events.
