Music Performance: Vocal Major (MUVJ)

The Bachelor of Music - Music Performance: Vocal Major is a professional degree. Admission to this program is by audition. No minor is required.

I. WMU Essential Studies (37 hours)


II. Major Area of Concentration (50 hours)


Includes Applied Music, Performance Ensembles, Vocal Studies, and World Language

Applied Music (24 hours)


A total of 24 credit hours of Applied Music on your major instrument. Sections designated for performance majors are three credits each semester and include juries.

  • Lower level (minimum of 4 hours); must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25 in MUS 2000

  • Credits: 1 to 4 hours
  • Upper level (minimum of 10 hours); must pass sophomore hearing for entrance, and must include a senior recital

  • Credits: 1 to 4 hours

Vocal Studies (6 hours)


Performance Ensembles (12 hours)


Major Ensemble (4 hours)


Students are required to complete four semesters of a major vocal ensemble (placement by audition):

Opera Workshop (2 hours)


Ensemble electives (6 hours)


Remaining ensemble electives may be selected from the following:

World Language Cognate (8 hours)


Vocal Performance majors are required to take 2 semesters of world language study, preferably French, German, and/or Italian. Depending on the language and level, one semester (4 credit hours) could satisfy WMU Essential Studies Level 2: World Language and Culture.

Aural Skills (3 hours)


Musicology (9 hours)


Conducting (1 hour)


Upper-level History/Theory (2 hours)


Selected from the following options:

Music Clearance (0 hours)


Verification of completion of juries, sophomore hearing, senior recital, and attendance at 84 Music Convocation events.

IV. Free Electives to make a minimum of 122 semester credit hours
