The Gerontology minor is a 15-credit hour course of study offered in the School of Interdisciplinary Health Programs. The minor is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of individuals working with older adults or studying aging processes. This minor compliments nearly all WMU majors. Improved knowledge of health, social, policy, and psychological aspects of aging can be applied in many careers. The minor can be completed entirely online with most of the required courses offered online only.

The learning outcomes for the Gerontology minor include:

  1. Discuss biological, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of aging.
  2. Identify and discuss the systems that influence aging and disability, such as policy, the aging network and health systems.
  3. Access and discuss research in gerontology and geriatrics.
  4. Describe the impact of environment on the function and independence of older adults.
  5. Integrate classroom learning experiences with service learning projects.
  6. Discuss the diversity of older adults.
  7. Describe basic demographic information and identify policy implications for older adults at national, state and local levels.
