The Psychology Major prepares students for a variety of career paths in which knowledge and application of psychology would be beneficial. It also prepares students for a wide variety of graduate programs in psychology or related fields by emphasizing a strong foundation in research. Admission to the Psychology Major requires a minimum grade of “C” in all five Introductory Core courses (PSY 1000, PSY 1400, PSY 1401, PSY 3000, PSY 3300). Completion of the major requires 18 additional credit hours of elective courses, with a minimum of nine credit hours selected from content courses. A minimum of nine hours must be taken from the WMU Psychology Department, and the student must obtain a grade of “C” or better in any courses that count toward the Psychology Major. All psychology majors are strongly encouraged to satisfy the Western Essential Studies requirement Quantitative Literacy before enrolling in upper-level courses. Many of the courses in the major are offered in an online format, as well as an in-person format. It is possible to complete the Psychology major in an online format, however not all electives are offered online.
