Western Michigan University students in the Assistive Technology for Individuals with Blindness or Visual Impairment program complete 9-15 credits to earn their certificate. This program offers students the opportunity to prepare for an assistive technology career or specialty. It is intended for professionals already certified in an area of blind rehabilitation or those students concurrently enrolled in any one of the BLS master’s programs as an add-on specialty in assistive technology (AT). Coursework is completed online and is designed for professionals working in settings with access to appropriate AT. Students can use this certificate to meet the university training requirements set forth by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals for Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialists (CATIS). Specialists in AT are well prepared for jobs in schools, rehabilitation centers, VA hospitals, and corporate or non-profit settings where they work teaching AT skills, maintaining AT devices, or advising on accessible design for digital environments. Students in this program complete core courses in assessment and instruction, as well as the courses in one or both of the technology or internship tracks, based on prior experience.
