French Major (FHLJ)

A minimum of 33 hours, including the following:

Two 4000- or 5000-level courses (one must be taken at WMU): Credits: 6 hours


Six hours of electives at the 3000-5000 level, to be selected with advisor. Electives may include other FREN courses and/or LANG 2750 or LANG 3750.


Course work to include:


Six hours of pre-approved courses taken abroad. These six credits can be taken as part of the required or elective hours. Exceptions to study abroad requirement may be granted where circumstances do not permit it.

Teaching Certification


Students pursuing a French language initial teaching certification must enroll in the College of Education and Human Development’s Post-Baccalaureate program after completion of their undergraduate French degree. As part of that program, they must complete LANG 6580 - Second Language Acquisition and Teaching. The prerequisites for enrollment in LANG 6580 include a minimum score of Advanced Low on the Oral Proficiency Interview exam. Please consult the College of Education’s revised secondary education guidelines for more information.
