A minimum of 32 hours, including the following:

One additional elective (three credit hour minimum) from the following:
- An elective taken in a pre-approved study abroad program;
OR
- GER 2750, GER 3170, GER 3280, GER 4530, or LANG 3750 (i.e., a course option listed above that the student has not already taken to fulfill requirements);
OR
- A pre-approved cognate course offered in another department with a connection to German studies, for example in History or Political Science.
Six hours of 5000-level German courses
Six hours of pre-approved courses taken abroad. These six credits can be taken as part of the required or elective hours. Exemptions to the study abroad requirement may be granted under exceptional circumstances.
The following courses cannot be counted toward the major:
GER 5000, GER 5010, LANG 5580
Teaching Certification
Students pursuing a German language initial teaching certification must enroll in the College of Education and Human Development’s Post-Baccalaureate program after completion of their undergraduate German degree. As part of that program, they must complete LANG 6580 - Second Language Acquisition and Teaching. The prerequisites for enrollment in LANG 6580 include a minimum score of Advanced Low on the Oral Proficiency Interview exam. Please consult the College of Education’s revised secondary education guidelines for more information.
