The Social Studies: History (coordinate minor) will help prepare you for a career in secondary education. You will develop the contextual grounding, theoretical frameworks, and research practices, necessary to develop lesson plans. Targeted out-of-class experiences will put this knowledge to immediate use as you hone your abilities in the classroom.
Note: This completion of the Social Studies Major, History Minor degree leads to but does not fulfill all requirements for teaching certification. Please consult the College of Education’s revised secondary education guidelines for more information.
Social Studies Major Requirements:
- Minimum of 21 hours in history. Minor must be completed in conjunction with the Social Studies-Secondary Education Major.
- At least one approved history course (3 hours) exploring diversity of U.S. Society. Select from: HIST 3160, 3191, 3251, 3260, 3265, 3280, or 3285.
- Completion of 6 hours at the intermediate (3000) level.
- At least one 3000-level course in the premodern category and at least one 3000-level course in the modern category.
- With permission of the advisor, students may substitute advanced level (4000-level) history courses for intermediate level (3000-level) courses in the same chronological category, providing the student has the appropriate prerequisite.
- Completion of 6 hours at the advanced (4000) level, with one course in the premodern and one course in the modern category. One of the two courses must be Baccalaureate Writing.
