Data Science Major (DSCJ)

Advisor: Dr. Yingying Zhang

This is an interdisciplinary program offered jointly by the Department of Statistics (COAS) and the Department of Computer Science (CEAS), housed in the Department of Statistics. Data Science is today one of the most rapidly developing disciplines and data scientists are in high demand in the job market. Students in this program develop skills that will allow them to take on current and future complex data challenges.

Mathematics Cognate (8 hours)

MATH 1220 - Calculus I Credits: 4 hours

Statistics Cognate (7 hours)

STAT 2600 - Data Analysis Using R Credits: 4 hours
STAT 4640 - Introduction to Statistical Computing Credits: 3 hours

Statistics Core (9 hours)

STAT 2630 - Introduction to Mathematical Statistics Using R Credits: 3 hours
STAT 4810 - Communicating with Data Credits: 3 hours
STAT 5680 - Regression Analysis Credits: 3 hours

Computer Science Core (17 hours)

CS 1110 - Computer Science I Credits: 4 hours
CS 1120 - Computer Science II Credits: 4 hours
CS 4430 - Database Management Systems Credits: 3 hours
CS 5110 - Big Data Credits: 3 hours
CS 5821 - Machine Learning Credits: 3 hours

Electives (6 hours)

Two courses from Statistics and/or Computer Science:

STAT (STAT 5450, STAT 5610, STAT 5660, STAT 5820, STAT 5670, STAT 5850, STAT 5860, STAT 5870, etc.)
CS (CS 3310, CS 3400, CS 3500, CS 5180, CS 5260, CS 5300, CS 5400, CS 5550, CS 5700, CS 5820, etc.)

Students should consult with a program advisor before enrolling in one of these elective courses, as certain 5000-level offerings are not appropriate for undergraduates.

Other Requirements

All students are required to have a laptop.

Accelerated Graduate Degree Program
