Students completing a Master of Science in Applied and Computational Mathematics will have obtained a broad background in the mathematical sciences, including statistics, differential equations, mathematical programming, and computational mathematics. The use of mathematical models to study practical problems is emphasized throughout the program. This program prepares students for professional employment in industry or government as well as for further studies in mathematics or to teach mathematics.

Admission Requirements

Entering students are expected to have taken courses in calculus (including multivariate calculus and differential equations), linear algebra, (calculus-based) probability or statistics, and have a working knowledge of computer programming. The courses at WMU which satisfy the admission requirements are: MATH (1220 or 1700), (1230 or 1710), 2720, 3740, 2300, STAT (3620, 3640), and CS (1110, 1120, or a CS course approved by an advisor). In addition, the student will prepare a written statement indicating (1) their preparation for the program and (2) their professional goals and purpose for seeking a graduate degree.

Program Requirements

The degree is available in both a non-thesis and a thesis option. Students wishing to transfer from one option to the other should discuss this with their advisor.
