Sociology Major (30 hours)

A major in Sociology consists of a minimum of 30 hours of course work in Sociology.

Electives (12 hours)


Students may choose their twelve hours of electives from the many offerings in the department. At least two of the elective courses must be at the 3000- to 5000-level; only one at the 1000-level.

Limitations to the requirements above include: (1) a maximum of 12 hours transferred from a two-year institution may be included; (2) at least 9 hours must be taken at Western Michigan University; (3) no more than one course at the 1000-level may be included. Any variance of the above requirements must be approved by the Undergraduate Advisor, 2401 Sangren Hall.

Transfer Students


Transfer students should see the department advisor, since any transfer credit in sociology without a stated equivalent must be evaluated by the department if it is to apply toward a sociology major or minor.

Baccalaureate-Level Writing Requirement


Students who have chosen the Sociology major will satisfy the Baccalaureate-Level Writing Requirement by successfully completing:
