GEOS 1440 - Environmental Earth Science

The earth system is a complicated engine that drives the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and the biosphere. This is the most unique planet in our solar system and perhaps the entire universe. The study of this system requires all the branches of physical sciences and some social sciences. Perhaps the most discernible change that has happened in recent times is the impact of humans on the earth system upsetting its delicate environment. Many of the deleterious effects caused by humans are discernible. Knowledge of science and technology is essential to mitigate these effects and make earth a sustainable planet. The course will familiarize the students with several of these issues even if they come with no science background. This course satisfies WMU Essential Studies Level 2: Exploration and Discovery – Science and Technology Category.

Credits: 3 hours

When Offered: Spring and subject to enrollment in Summer II.
