This course surveys the major events and mechanisms of that history, focusing on the origins of our planet and its life, self-organization and complexity, bacteria in extreme environments, the rise of animals and plants, the colonization of land, mass extinctions, planetary change over time and the possibility of life elsewhere in the cosmos. Three lectures and a two-hour laboratory period per week. This course satisfies WMU Essential Studies Level 2: Exploration and Discovery – Scientific Literacy with Lab Category.
