EM 4871 - Lean Principles & Practices


This course introduces a broad range of lean principles including but not limited to 5S, JIT, Kaizen, Kanban, Jidoka and provides an in-depth understanding of lean enterprise principles. Our lean journey begins with an illustration of how each lean concept is applied and how it relates to the processes. Mapping the process flow and identifying the activities that add value from the customer’s perspective is the cornerstone of this class. The course also provides understanding of how to structure and manage a lean process for continuous improvement in their organizations to support and a lean process regardless of the type of industry. Participants will also fully understand how to implement 5S within their plants and how to begin reducing setup time using the SMED process essential for reducing manufacturing lead time (MLT) that provides competitive advantage in the 21st century globally. This course will prepare students for Lean Green Belt (LGB) certification from leading institutions. This class meets for the first five weeks of the semester only.
