History Minor

1.  Minimum grade of “C” in all course work required for the minor, including required cognates.

2.  Completion of History 2900.

3.  Completion of at least 3 hours (one course) selected of “writing-intensive” courses at the 3000-level (see list of classes below) and 3 hours (one course) of 4000-level baccalaureate writing courses.

4.  Completion of at least one 3000- or 4000-level course from the premodern category and one 3000- or 4000-level course from the modern category.

5.  All U.S., Africa, Asia, Latin America, Middle East and European 4000-level history courses meet baccalaureate writing requirement.

Core Requirements:


1. Introductory level history courses (3 hours)


2. Intermediate and advanced level history courses (6 hours)


  • At least one 3000- or 4000-level course from the premodern category.
  • At least one 3000- or 4000-level course from the modern category.

3. Complete a 3-hour writing intensive course.


The prerequisite for the intermediate level history courses is HIST 2900.

4. You will complete 3 hours of advanced 4000-level baccalaureate writing course work.


  • In either the premodern or modern category.

The prerequisite is one 3000-level writing intensive course or instructor approval.

Tracks (select one)


A. History Track


Minimum of 24 hours of course work in history, with a maximum of 9 hours at the introductory level (including 1000/2000-level courses, two-year institution transfers, and AP credits).

In addition to the Core Requirements, you will complete two additional classes at any level and three additional classes at the 3000-, 4000-, or 5000-level.

B. History, Secondary Education Track

Minimum of 27-29 hours of course work in history and related disciplines.

2. You will complete 6 hours of intermediate level history courses.


  • Select one 3000-level premodern history course.
  • Select one 3000-level modern history course.

3. You will complete 3 hours of advanced 4000-level course work.


  • In either the premodern or modern category.

The prerequisite is one 3000-level writing intensive course or instructor approval.

4. You will complete 3 hours of history internship/practicum.


5. You will complete 6-8 hours of cognates.


One course in Geography (3-4 hours)

One course in Political Science (3-4 hours)

6. All course work at the 3000/4000-level must be completed within ten years of intern teaching.
