This Bachelor of Science program is designed for those who wish to become a certified teacher in a technical/occupational subject area. The program leads to a state of Michigan Standard Certificate with a CTE endorsement. The program appeals to individuals desiring to teach technical/occupational subjects in comprehensive high schools, trade academies, and area career and technical centers. No minor is required.
Admission Requirements
All education students are coded Pre-Education upon admission to the University. Candidates may apply for advancement to the Occupational Education Studies professional program after meeting the requirements listed below at the time of application:
- Completion of 35 credits
- Completion of an approved WES Level 1: writing course with a grade of “C” or better.
- Completion of ED 2500 Human Development: Applications in Education or an approved course with a grade of “C” or better;
- A cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher.

Program Requirements for Occupational Education Studies
1. Complete a teachable major
A teachable major requires a minimum of 30 hours in a Michigan Department of Education (MDE) approved teachable technical/occupational program of study (CIP Code) completed with any combination of the following: (1) as part of an associate degree, (2) with a combination of community college and WMU courses, (3) with WMU Prior Learning Assessment, or (4) with passing scores on the Michigan Occupational Competency Assessment Center (MOCAC) examination. 2. Complete work experience
A minimum of 4,000 hours of recent and relevant work experience, as defined by the MDE, in the teachable major CIP code are required. Talk with a CEHD advisor or the Program Coordinator about MDE’s current approved work experience options. 3. Complete the following 6 hours of Pre-Professional Courses with a grade of “C” or better
4. Complete the following 18 hours of Professional Education Courses with a grade of “C” or better
