PHYS 1040 - Introduction to the Sky and Solar System This is an introduction to the night sky and our solar system. The student will learn about the cycles of the Sun, Moon, planets, and constellations; the historical development of astronomy; basic properties of light and telescopes; nature and properties of the planets and the Sun; asteroids, meteorites, and comets; and the origin and evolution of the solar system. Taken concurrently with PHYS 1030, this course satisfies WMU Essential Studies Level 2: Exploration and Discovery – Scientific Literacy with Lab Category.
Prerequisites & Corequisites: Prerequisite: MATH 1100 or MATH 1110 or MATH 1140 or MATH 1160 or MATH 1180 or MATH 1220 or MATH 1230 or MATH 1700 or MATH 1710 or MATH 2000, with a grade of “C” or better or equivalent; or ACT Math score in the range from 20 to 36 inclusive; or SAT Math score in the range from 490 to 800 inclusive; or by an equivalent Department of Mathematics placement mechanism.
