Music Education: Choral/General: Secondary Education Major (MCSJ)

The Bachelor of Music - Education: Choral/General Secondary Education Major is a professional degree which culminates in certification to teach Music in the public schools, grades K-12. Admission to this program is by audition in voice or piano, and an interview with education faculty. No minor is required. The process for continuing enrollment in this major is outlined in the Music Student Handbook.

Courses in Music Education (18 hours)
Non-Music Cognates (21 hours)
Students must submit an Application for Admission to Upper Professional Level Education Courses to the College of Education and Human Development prior to enrollment in ES 3950 or LS 3050.
III. General Music Studies (55 hours)
Primary Applied Music (14 hours)
A total of 14 credit hours of Applied Music in either voice or keyboard. Sections designated for non-performance majors are 2 credits each semester and include juries. Successful completion of a sophomore hearing is required for entrance to MUS 3000.
Secondary Applied (6 hours)
Education majors must take secondary studies in either piano or voice. Students who pass a piano competency exam (up through MUS 3210) may be excused from any keyboard requirements and substitute other Music electives for these credits.
Performance Ensembles (8 hours)
Major Ensemble (4 hours)
Students are required to complete four semesters of a major vocal ensemble (placement by audition):

Remaining ensemble electives may be selected from the list below. Education majors are strongly encouraged to elect at least one jazz ensemble experience.
Upper-level History/Theory (2 hours)
Selected from the following options:
Music Clearance (0 hours)
Verification of completion of juries, sophomore hearing, keyboard proficiency, senior hearing, and attendance at 84 Music Convocation events.
